Nice aerial view of the yard west of the station. PRR used the yard closer to 31st St, on the left; LIRR used the yard on the right, adjacent to 33rd St. This reflected the usage pattern, LIRR using tracks 13-21, and PRR using the rest, though there was some overlap in peak periods. The tower spanning the center tracks is Tower A, controlling the west station throat. The station, which covered the two blocks from 31st to 33rd Streets between 7th and 8th Avenues, was torn down between 1963 and 1967, what some consider the greatest act of vandalism in American history. PRR, starved for cash, sold the air rights, resulting in Penn Plaza and the new Madison Square Garden, replacing the old Garden, which at the time was at 8th Av and 51 St. The result for train riders was a glorified subway station, with all of the charm of the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The station was modernized in the 1990's-and got air conditioning, a real blessing in August-and it is now more appealing, but lacks the
